Social Venture Partners’ HEART Tutoring Program Hires First Executive Director

July 17, 2013

CHARLOTTE, NC – HEART Tutoring (Helping Ensure Academic Results through Tutoring), a program developed by the non-profit Social Venture Partners (SVP), announced today that following a national search, Emily Elliott has been named as the program’s first Executive Director. HEART is a program that recruits and empowers volunteers to work effectively as tutors for math in Charlotte’s Title I elementary schools. Elliott’s unique background in both business and education will bring strength to HEART’s management team and provide the organization with solid leadership for expansion and growth.

Elliott began her career as an investment banking analyst with Wells Fargo before moving to California where she taught math for an intervention-focused middle school in San Jose for two years. She went on to become a Financial Strategy Associate with Rocketship Education, a national non-profit school system that operates public elementary charter schools in low-income areas.

Bill Anderson, Executive Director of MeckEd, comments, “HEART and SVP are very fortunate to have hired Emily Elliott as their new Executive Director. Emily’s teaching experience through Teach For America (TFA) provides her with unique insight and ability to effectively address the challenges faced by those students, families and schools as HEART strives to support Charlotte’s most challenged school communities. It should also be noted Emily’s passion for education and personal integrity make her a perfect fit for this role. Our community should be very proud that one of our best and brightest young people has come home to serve those who are most in need of our support.”

Elliott joins HEART as it begins its fourth year of training and supporting volunteers to provide targeted math tutoring in Charlotte’s Title I elementary schools. The success of the program over the first three years affirmed the hiring of an Executive Director as foundational for reaching its strategic goals of offering tutoring in all elementary grades and in offering the program to additional schools each year. Achieving these goals would mean greater community involvement in public schools and more students working at grade level in Math. Elliott comments, “It is great to be returning to Charlotte and joining a program that is already showing the tremendous impact devoted volunteers can make on students who need extra help. The potential for further development and expansion is exciting, and I look forward to being a part of that growth.”
