"Heart Math Tutoring involves tutors who ask students to think and do, and discover math concepts which allows the students to develop number sense and a conceptual understanding of math. This type of tutoring increases retention and produces long-lasting effects."

Our nation and children are missing out on significant potential when just 39% of 4th graders are demonstrating proficiency in math across the U.S. (2024 NAEP). Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) believes all students can learn math at high levels and aims to support students and schools by providing a volunteer-delivered, individualized intervention where young students can have successful experiences in math.
Tutoring Model
In each school, 50 students in grades 1-5 receive one-on-one tutoring twice per week for 30 minutes during the school day. HMT’s activity-based, structured curriculum and on-site support from staff during tutoring enables volunteers to be effective with a commitment of one hour per week and minimizes day-to-day work for school staff.
HMT’s model was built for replication. Significant investments made by HMT National – curriculum, custom Salesforce platform, standard operating procedures, volunteer recruitment strategies, and more – can be shared effectively with other communities to help more students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long term success.
Expansion so Far
HMT has grown since its 2013 establishment to support 29 schools and 1,300+ students in Charlotte, NC, Charleston, SC and Winston-Salem, NC in the 2024/25 school year. HMT is currently seeking partners to support its continued expansion into new regions and provide one-on-one tutoring to more students.
Highlights from recent geography expansion include:
- Student success! To date, 97% of over 6,400 students served throughout the Carolinas have shown meaningful growth between pre- and post-assessments and over 90% of teachers have reported an increase in their students’ confidence due to involvement in HMT. See HMT Annual Reports for more details about student results.
- Local funding and volunteer partnerships. HMT is supported by volunteers and philanthropy from our expanding network. Visit regional Community Partners pages for more information: Charlotte, Charleston, Winston-Salem
- Local advisory board leadership. HMT staff and advisory boards work together closely to carry out HMT’s mission in their communities.
HMT is well positioned to reach an additional 3-4 regions by 2030. The HMT National Partnerships Team is prepared to assist a local Steering Committee in fundraising and project management and will directly manage/coach local staff in program implementation. We seek volunteer leaders and funding partners to support expansion efforts to new geographies.

Testimonials
“The first year was phenomenal. The volunteers were so enthralled with helping students and I think [the students] got a lot of benefit out of it. We saw their confidence grow, saw their commitment to even their own growth – grow. And I thought that was really phenomenal, considering they’re so young.“
– Dr. Cheryl Frazier, Principal at Bolton Elementary in Winston-Salem, NC. 2nd Year of Partnership
“I had a student who went into Heart Math Tutoring performing at the Kindergarten level. In just a few short months of attending Heart, his fall to winter scores sky rocketed! He went up an entire grade level and is now more confident in his mathematical skills. I am very thankful for the tutors and the entire program staff at Heart Math Tutoring!”
–2nd Grade Teacher at Ladson Elementary in Charleston, SC. 3rd Year of Partnership
“Not only did I feel like I was actively making a difference every session, but I learned so much about the power of really engaging with my community and how rewarding building individual relationships with people around me can be.“
