Corporate partners’ spring funding provides tutoring for students in the 2021/22 school year at Heart Math Tutoring
April 23, 2021
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Heart Math Tutoring is excited to announce recent funding that will support Charlotte students in the 2021-22 school year. Grants from Barings, Brighthouse Financial Foundation, Duke Energy Foundation, TIAA, and other local foundations and individuals will provide CMS students in grades 1-5 access to HMT’s volunteer-delivered, individualized math tutoring program offered at no cost to families.
With this recent $50,000 grant, Brighthouse Financial Foundation will act as a Heart Math Tutoring school sponsor for the third year. Brighthouse Financial Foundation is currently sponsoring 21 students who receive 30 minutes of virtual tutoring twice weekly at Sterling Elementary, and 19 employees are current tutors.
Through Barings Social Impact, the firm’s initiative to put the power to effect change in the hands of its associates, Barings has pledged $30,000 to support tutoring at Barringer Academic Center during the 2021-22 school year. A Heart Math Tutoring school sponsor and volunteer partner for many years, Barings currently has ten employees serving as volunteer tutors.
Duke Energy Foundation has pledged $15,000 to HMT as part of the foundation’s Powerful Communities initiative to help Heart Math Tutoring’s transition to a virtual program format. “After a difficult year for North Carolina’s students and families, we’re investing in programs that address the disproportionate learning loss among vulnerable communities and help put students on a path to academic success,” said Stephen De May, North Carolina president, Duke Energy.
TIAA, whose funding and volunteer support of Heart Math Tutoring dates back to 2016, has pledged $10,000 to support tutoring for the 2021/22 academic year. This year, 23 TIAA employees serve as volunteer tutors, embodying TIAA’s century-long history of serving the needs of others.
Additional spring funding commitments from C.D. Spangler Foundation, Charlotte Woman’s Club, The Dickson Foundation, First Presbyterian Church, Harvard Business School Alumni Association, Junior League of Charlotte, The Merancas Foundation, POWER Foundation, and Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church*, among other grants and individual gifts will allow CMS elementary students to receive individualized math tutoring and mentorship from a caring adult. This school year, over 500 students across 19 elementary schools are receiving twice weekly virtual tutoring via Zoom and Google Jamboard. HMT’s 1,000+ virtual tutors volunteer for one hour each week with support from a Program Coordinator, a staff member dedicated to overseeing tutor and school logistics while providing real-time support during tutoring sessions.
With a tested and proven virtual model, Heart Math Tutoring is prepared for a variety of classroom scenarios in 2021-22, and we plan to continue to offer virtual tutoring in some capacity in the future to reach more students across Charlotte.
