Heart Math Tutoring Helps 930+ Elementary Students Build Math Skills and Confidence
June 24, 2022
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – June 24, 2022 – Heart Math Tutoring (HMT, Heart), a Charlotte-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping young students build math skills and confidence through weekly, individualized support from volunteer tutors, has determined the impact its program had across 24 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) elementary schools in the 2021/22 school year.
In the 2021/22 school year, volunteers used HMT’s structured curriculum and on-site support to help over 930 students build a strong foundation in math. Ninety-seven percent of Heart students met program growth goals in math, growing in two or more building block concept areas. On average, students doubled the goal, growing in 4.5 concept areas. The goals were set with guidance from math specialists at CMS and UNC Charlotte.
In addition, 90% of teachers believe that students showed increased confidence in math ability as a result of Heart, and families of HMT students gave a Net Promoter Score of 93, with 94% giving a score of 9 or 10 when asked the likelihood they would recommend the program to others.
“The one-on-one attention was something that [my child] needed and I’m grateful he was able to take part of [HMT] as I have seen an amazing improvement since he started.” – Parent of a 5th Grade HMT student at Cotswold Elementary School
In 2020, HMT piloted an all-virtual model in response to COVID-19-related school closures and adapted the model for 10 school sites in 2021/22, where students and HMT staff were on site at schools and volunteers joined virtually through Zoom. The virtual program enables HMT to reach more volunteers and students, and results showed that 95% of virtual students met program growth goals.
Since 2013, HMT has grown from 120 volunteers across two school sites to 1,144 across 24 school sites, collectively providing more than 16,000 hours of one-on-one instruction to CMS students this school year. 98 percent of volunteers rated their experience with Heart as positive.
