Heart Math Tutoring Honors Volunteers at Second Annual HeartThrob Event
February 10, 2016
Heart Math Tutoring (Heart) – a nonprofit group dedicated to helping students in high-poverty concentration schools develop math skills and academic confidence – kicked off February with its Second Annual HeartThrob event.
The sold-out event featured 260 attendees gathered at Draught on Friday, Feb. 5 for an evening of fun and celebration to honor the work of Heart’s young professional tutors, who make up almost half of Heart’s volunteer base. Ticket sales from the event benefitted Heart, and event sponsors included BB&T, Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, 9Round Dilworth, Java Joes, T. Reid and Company Salon & Spa. A $5,000 donation was also made anonymously by a private donor to honor the contributions by young professionals to the organization’s growth and impact.
Heart is a math intervention program that recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work as tutors in high-poverty elementary schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Sixty percent of economically disadvantaged students in CMS perform below grade level in math. Heart uses research-based assessments and provides volunteer-friendly lesson plans that target the gaps of each individual student. To date, 97% of students tutored by Heart have met program growth goals set in partnership with CMS.
Since 2013/14, Heart has grown from serving 105 students in two schools to now serving more than 400 students across eight schools. There are currently 450 volunteer tutors – 46 percent of whom are young professionals – who spend one hour each week delivering Heart’s research-based, structured curriculum. Much of the volunteer growth has been spurred by volunteer tutors, who have recruited friends and colleagues to join in Heart’s efforts, helping to ensure that struggling elementary students build a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics. That growth is also reflective in attendance at HeartThrob, which included 140 attendees at last year’s inaugural event.
“We appreciate everyone who attended HeartThrob to celebrate our tutors’ work,” said Emily Elliott, executive director of Heart Math Tutoring. “This event – planned and hosted by volunteers – was a great way to celebrate our young professional tutors, to raise funds and to recruit new tutors for additional students who need one-on-one support. Thanks to everyone involved in making this year’s HeartThrob a success!”
