Heart Math Tutoring Kicks Off Annual Volunteer Recruitment Campaign

July 24, 2025

CHARLESTON, S.C. – July 24, 2025

Heart Math Tutoring (Heart or HMT), a local nonprofit organization committed to helping students in Charleston elementary schools develop a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics, is excited to officially begin recruiting and training volunteer tutors to partner with students in the 2025/26 school year. Heart tutors will provide one-on-one tutoring to students at five Charleston-area elementary schools who have been identified by their teachers as needing additional support in math. Heart’s goal is to serve 200 students by recruiting approximately 250 volunteer tutors, and the community’s help is needed to spread the word.

With just 1 hour per week from October to April, each volunteer can be a part of the student success equation that results in positive education outcomes for elementary students. Heart provides everything tutors need – informative training, hands-on curriculum, and an on-site Program Coordinator for support. Tutoring is meaningful and fun for both students and tutors. In the 2024/25 school year, 100% of Charleston students who completed the program showed growth in 2 or more mathematical concept areas, meeting program goals, and 97% of Heart tutors rated their volunteer experience as positive. Join Heart’s network of trained volunteer tutors and make a positive impact on students in your community by signing up today!

In addition to Charleston’s program, Heart will continue to offer tutoring in Charlotte, NC and Winston-Salem, NC in the 2025/26 school year. Interested tutors in these cities can select their preferred school and tutoring time on the Charlotte sign-up form or the Winston-Salem sign-up form.

The tutors are kind, caring, and build relationships with students that increase their confidence, math proficiency, and success throughout the school year. The tutors also spark a love of learning and
joy in the students; scholars often return to class with a smile and are proud of themselves in accomplishing a learning goal.”
