Heart Tutors Featured in Article by The 74

February 6, 2024

Heart Math Tutoring and two longtime Heart tutors were featured in an article by national education news site, The 74! The article highlights the need for students to have hands-on experience with numbers and how Heart tutors contribute to this research supported instruction.

The 74 quoted leaders in math education, including Dr. Dionne Cross Francis and Dr. Jo Boaler, on their support for emphasizing concrete math activities. Francis said, “we want to engage kids in really rich worthwhile experiences where they’re developing concepts from engagement with activities.”

Two Heart volunteers, 4th year tutor Elizabeth Darden and 10th year tutor Logan Henderson, were interviewed for the article. Darden shared that the activities she does with her students are “fun, interactive games” and spoke to how her students build confidence during tutoring sessions. Henderson added that “Heart’s approach to teaching math is different from how he remembered learning math when he was in school, where the focus was on memorizing math facts like multiplication tables” and told readers that a tutor does not need to be “a math expert” to support student growth. Thank you to Elizabeth and Logan for sharing your experiences and for your dedication to Charlotte students!

We’re grateful for the work Heart tutors do each week to support their students in developing the important foundational understanding of numbers that is highlighted in this article.
