Students, Families and Tutors Celebrate End of Year

Over the next week, families, tutors, and students will gather to celebrate a great year of tutoring and students’ progress in Heart Tutoring with food and fun. Families will learn math games to play at home over summer break, and students will receive goodie bags that include a deck of cards and game directions that are on their level. All will celebrate students’ accomplishments in Heart Math Tutoring!

2017 NAEP Scores

This week, results from the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) became available. NAEP is administered every two years and serves as a common metric for states and selected urban districts. In 2017, Charlotte fourth grade math proficiency rates ranked second out of the selected urban districts and exceeded North Carolina and nation averages (below).

Overall, 46% of fourth graders in Charlotte are performing on grade level in math. For Economically Disadvantaged Students (EDS) however, 29% are on grade level. In 2017, fourth grade math proficiency … continue reading

Happy National Volunteer Month!

April is National Volunteer Month and we want to take a moment to extend our deepest gratitude for each and every one of our amazing volunteers. Across 17 partner schools, over 980 volunteers are dedicating their time every week to provide Charlotte students with the strong foundation in math and the confidence they need for long-term success. CMS Releases “Breaking the Link” Equity Report

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released Breaking the Link, a 70-page equity report on school demographics, teacher qualifications, test results, attendance data, and more. This kicks off the district’s strategic planning process for 2018-2024.

We applaud and thank the CMS Accountability Office for this endeavor.

“Any challenging effort for meaningful change must begin with acknowledgement of hard truths,” the report says. “Thus, this report… seeks to provide a solid, data-based picture of our schools with the most recent data available.”

Heart Math Tutoring Featured in The Mint Hill Times

Heart Math Tutoring was featured in The Mint Hill Times newspaper on February 14, 2018.  We are grateful to The Mint Hill Times for sharing with the broader Mint Hill community how someone could volunteer to help an elementary student who’s falling behind in foundational math. 

“Heart is offered in 17 CMS schools, which include Lebanon Road Elementary and Piney Grove Elementary near the Mint Hill area. The organization is looking to add volunteers at both schools, along with others around CMS,” Marion said.
