Volunteer Appreciation Month – Celebrating “Double Dippers”

April is National Volunteer Month! This month we celebrate all of our volunteers who support students each week! Throughout April we will highlight several of our “Double Dipper” volunteers who tutor at multiple schools. Thank you for your dedication to students!

Leading on Opportunity – The Opportunity Task Force’s call to action

Alarmingly, Charlotte and Atlanta ranked 50th out of 50 in economic mobility among the largest U.S. cities in a 2013 Harvard / UC Berkley study. A $400,000 report summarizing 18 months of research by Charlotte’s Opportunity Task Force was released last Monday 3/27/17.

This 97-page document outlines 21 strategies and over 80 recommendations for our community. Here are a few points:

Heart Math Tutoring Kicks Off Spring Funding Initiative

Heart Math Tutoring kicks off its spring funding initiative today with a boost from The Leon Levine Foundation, who has awarded Heart a $350,000 capacity-building grant! The grant is payable over three years as Heart offers one-on-one tutoring to more students, scales its work, and becomes more sustainable. $130,000 of the grant goes towards Heart’s current funding initiative, which seeks $880K to partner with 18 schools in the 2017/18 school year. Heart word problem: If every Heart student receives two stickers per week, how many stickers does Heart have to purchase for a school year?

Answer: 38,628 That’s a lot of stickers!

 

Heart word problem: If every second grade student in Heart lost two teeth, how many teeth would Heart students lose this year?

Answer: 454 teeth!

Wilson’s World Celebrates PiDay With Heart Math Tutoring

Wilson’s World joined Heart students at Montclaire Elementary this morning to celebrate PiDay. Students Scarlett and Oscar talked with their 5th grade teacher Mr. O’Leary about how they incorporate Pi in the classroom, and why they enjoy math!
