04.15.2015

Chris Brown tutors a first grader and a third grader at Highland Renaissance Academy in NoDa. Chris started in September after learning about the opportunity through the Volunteer Portal at Bank of America, where he works. Bank of America is one of our Community Partners.

Why do you volunteer?

Volunteer With HEART: Jeanette Price

04.07.2015

Jeanette Price is a veteran volunteer and proctor with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She is part of the National Alumnae Association for West Charlotte High School.

We’ve also emptied our unit at Devon Self Storage!

“The biggest downside … continue reading

The goal for the student is to know more than just the rote memorization of the list of numbers. He needs to understand one-to-one correspondence, so he practices picking up one cube with each number. He learns that each number is represented by a group of cubes, and he determines what a numeral looks like in writing, on … continue reading

Westerly Hills Academy Becomes HEART’s 5th Partner School

03.25.2015

HEART Tutoring volunteers began working with 27 third graders at Westerly Hills Academy in January.

Westerly Hills, located at 4420 Denver Avenue in West Charlotte, is HEART’s fifth Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools partner school.

As the third graders face their first state End-Of-Grade tests, volunteers are focusing on filling in some conceptual gaps in number concepts. The tutors also help build confidence through mentoring and encouragement. The students are working on foundational number sense concepts ranging from the concept of “more” and “less” to decomposing numbers and … continue reading
