HMT Board Spotlight: Velvet Simington

January 22, 2026

Velvet Simington is the Director of Math and Science for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and brings more than 30 years of experience as an educator and education leader. Velvet was an early partner in Heart’s expansion to Winston-Salem, serving on the steering committee and now Advisory Board. We’re deeply grateful for the perspective and leadership she brings to Heart’s mission.

What first drew you to Heart Math Tutoring?

As a math educator, I’ve seen how early experiences with math can either open doors for students or create barriers that last for years. What drew me to Heart Math Tutoring was its intentional focus on reaching students early and helping them experience success in a way that builds confidence, not anxiety. I wanted to be part of something that supports both students’ skills and how they feel about themselves as math learners to promote a positive math identity.

What inspires you to keep supporting Heart today?

What keeps me inspired is the time I spend with students each week—watching them grow more comfortable, take risks, and begin to believe they can do math. As a district mathematics and science leader, tutoring helps me stay connected to students and keeps me grounded in why this work matters. I’m also incredibly grateful for the partnership between Heart and WS/FCS, which provides meaningful, consistent support to students who need it most.

As you look ahead to the new year, what do you hope students will gain or experience through Heart?

I hope students continue to build strong math skills while also developing confidence, curiosity, joy, and a sense of belonging in mathematics. My greatest hope is that students leave their Heart tutoring sessions believing in their own potential and carrying that confidence back into their classrooms. With Heart’s support, students don’t just improve academically—they begin to see new possibilities for their future. That’s the kind of impact that truly matters.
