Karen Sutton of Heart Math Tutoring

Staff Spotlight: Karen Sutton, Program Coordinator at Pinewood Elementary

Karen Sutton is the newest member of Heart Math Tutoring’s team and will be the coordinator at Pinewood Elementary, our eighth school partner.

Karen graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education and completed graduate courses in Counseling. She is originally from Columbia, SC, and has two children.

Karen worked for several years as a Case Coordinator with Mecklenburg County, linking children and adults with developmental disabilities to needed services. She has also worked as a … continue reading

Heart Math Tutoring Adds Pinewood Elementary As 8th School Partner

We are excited to add Pinewood Elementary School as a new school partner! Pinewood is now one of eight Heart school sites in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in 2015-16.

“We are thrilled and grateful that interest from community volunteers and support from donors allowed us to offer the program to Pinewood Elementary, where students in grades 2, 3, and 4 will receive tutoring twice per week starting in mid-October,” said Emily Elliott, executive director of Heart Math Tutoring.

Students at seven elementary schools met with Heart Math Tutoring volunteers for the first time this week. The first week of tutoring is one of our favorite times of the year.

Tutors Exceed Goal And Will Serve More Students

On Sept. 17, Heart tutors and staff celebrated the end of the “official” 2015 Volunteer Drive and the beginning of programming in schools. As of Sept. 17, 425 weekly volunteers were signed up as tutors, enough to serve almost 370 students, exceeding this year’s goal of recruiting to serve 350 students! What It Means To Become A Heart Math Tutoring Volunteer

Heart Math Tutoring volunteers commit to weekly tutoring sessions that last either 30 minutes or one hour and can team up with friends, family and colleagues to be “partner tutors.” A Heart staff person is on site at all times to make sure tutors have what they need.

“We tell our volunteers that 50 percent of your job is to deliver the curriculum and then other 50 percent is to be a positive influence,” says Emily Elliott, Heart’s Executive Director.
