Volunteer With HEART: Jeanette Price

Jeanette Price is a veteran volunteer and proctor with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She is part of the National Alumnae Association for West Charlotte High School.

While Jeanette was at Alexander Graham Middle School with the after-school program Bulldogs Matter, she was asked to help students with math homework. HEART Tutoring Moves To New Office

As HEART Tutoring has continued to grow, so has the team’s need for a bigger space.

Our new office is at 1100 South Mint Street, Suite 102, near Bank of America stadium. The move provides more space for team meetings and for assembling tutoring materials. Volunteer and co-founder Catherine Fischer will be pleased to hear we no longer need to take over her basement during tutoring material prep season in August. We’ve also emptied our unit at Devon Self Storage!

Westerly Hills Academy Becomes HEART’s 5th Partner School

HEART Tutoring volunteers began working with 27 third graders at Westerly Hills Academy in January.

Westerly Hills, located at 4420 Denver Avenue in West Charlotte, is HEART’s fifth Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools partner school.

As the third graders face their first state End-Of-Grade tests, volunteers are focusing on filling in some conceptual gaps in number concepts. The tutors also help build confidence through mentoring and encouragement. HEART is moving its offices and is on the hunt for furniture!

If you have any extra office furniture you would like to donate or know of good places to look, email Executive Director Emily Elliott at eelliott@hearttutoring.org.

Here’s our wish list for the new space:

  • Four desks
  • Four desk chairs
  • Two bookcases
  • Two file cabinets
  • Conference table with chairs for 10-12 people

Hands-On Learning More Effective, Hands Down

A recent post on Parent Toolkit echoes HEART Tutoring’s curriculum that encourages students to learn through hands-on experience with the numbers rather than memorizing procedures or facts. HEART uses all seven tips that Parent Toolkit suggests.
