CMS Releases “Breaking the Link” Equity Report

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools released Breaking the Link, a 70-page equity report on school demographics, teacher qualifications, test results, attendance data, and more. This kicks off the district’s strategic planning process for 2018-2024.

We applaud and thank the CMS Accountability Office for this endeavor.

“Any challenging effort for meaningful change must begin with acknowledgement of hard truths,” the report says. “Thus, this report… seeks to provide a solid, data-based picture of our schools with the most recent data available.”

Heart Math Tutoring Featured on Spectrum News for Giving Tuesday

Emily Elliott from Heart Math Tutoring was featured on Spectrum News Charlotte to discuss how community members can give back on Giving Tuesday by signing up to tutor students in high-poverty schools.

Emily Elliott from Heart Math Tutoring was on WBTV News to discuss Heart’s annual Volunteer Recruitment Drive.

“We are going to need about 1,000 volunteers this fall, growing from 750 last year. The tutors do a great job helping kids build skills and confidence,” says Elliott. “In Charlotte, 56% of economically disadvantaged students are not performing on grade level and that number grows as the course level gets more difficult.
